Thomas Christiansen has been the architect of the most successful era in Panamanian football history. The Danish-Spanish coach guided Los Canaleros to their second World Cup, unbeaten across the final four qualifying matches, and has retained the experienced core that delivered the result. In 2018, in Russia, Panama left without a point but scored their first-ever World Cup goals — this time, the ambition is considerably higher.
Captain Aníbal Godoy, 36, holds the national caps record at 159 appearances and brings leadership and composure from San Diego FC in MLS. Midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla was included despite picking up a knock in the Liga MX final and will be monitored closely. Striker Cecilio Waterman and winger Ismael Díaz provide the attacking threat, while the squad spans MLS, Latin American leagues and clubs in Turkey, Slovakia and England. Ghana’s Kudus absence matters enormously in this specific match-up. He would have been their most creative force against a compact Panama midfield, and Queiroz’s limited time in charge means his replacement system has not been properly stress-tested. Panama meanwhile carry uncertainty over Carrasquilla’s fitness, and without him their midfield loses its most dynamic ball-carrier.
Betting Verdict
This is genuinely tight. Ghana have the individual quality in wide areas to cause Panama problems, particularly through Semenyo and Iñaki Williams. But the Kudus absence is significant, and Queiroz has had almost no time to prepare. Panama are well-organised, physically competitive and motivated. Christiansen’s side know this is their best opportunity for a result in the group and will set up accordingly.
