In defence, Abdukodir Khusanov of Manchester City is the most recognisable name to European audiences — but arrived at the World Cup short of match sharpness having barely featured at City since his £44 million January 2025 move. Abbosbek Fayzullayev provides creativity in midfield, while Otabek Shukurov provides the defensive screening that Cannavaro’s system demands. The Opening Angle
These sides have never met before at senior level. Colombia are a different calibre of opponent to anything Uzbekistan have faced competitively, but Cannavaro’s side qualified without losing more than one match across their entire AFC campaign and are organised enough to make this difficult. The Azteca crowd is unlikely to favour either side strongly, given both are effectively neutral visitors.
The key tactical question is whether Uzbekistan can survive the first twenty minutes without conceding, and whether Cannavaro’s counter-attacking plan can generate enough from Shomurodov to keep Colombia honest. If Colombia score early, this game could get away from the White Wolves.

Colombia are clear favourites with good reason. However, Uzbekistan are not here to make up the numbers, and Cannavaro’s defensive setup will make Colombia work for everything they get.
